Lightning Policy & Pool Safety

The KWC Rules state the following regarding our thunder/lightning policy:

Upon hearing thunder, guards will call a Thunder Break that will last 30 minutes; each subsequent rumble will start a new 30-minute countdown.
Upon observing lightning or dangerously high winds, lifeguards will clear the entire pool area for the duration of the inclement weather.
In cases of severe weather, lifeguards and/or Pool Manager have the authority to close the pool at their discretion.

Our Red Cross-certified lifeguards have grown up in our area and work hard to ensure member safety at the pool. The presence of lifeguards at a pool does not relieve parents of the need to closely monitor their children who do not swim well or at all. Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death in children aged 1-4. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that whenever children under age 5 are in or around water, an adult – preferably one who knows how to swim and perform CPR – should be within arm’s length at all times, providing “touch supervision.”

Our lifeguards undergo periodic trainings to practice their skills. Their job is to help keep members safe at and around the pool and to respond to emergencies in and out of the water. As part of their training, they learn how to respond to swimmers in distress, how to remove injured swimmers from the pool, how to administer CPR and first-aid, and how to use an AED.
